Do I Need to Speak Japanese?

Not necessarily! Many programs are taught entirely in English. However, learning Japanese — even at a basic level — will dramatically improve your daily life, job prospects, and connections in Japan. We highly recommend starting early.

JLPT Levels Explained

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the standard certification. Here's what each level means:

N5 – Beginner

Understand basic Japanese expressions. Learn hiragana, katakana, and 800 words.

3-6 months
N4 – Elementary

Understand basic daily conversations. Required for many language school programs.

6-12 months
N3 – Intermediate

Read newspapers and hold general conversations. Required for some undergraduate programs.

1-2 years
N2 – Upper Intermediate

Required for most undergraduate programs taught in Japanese. Can handle most professional settings.

2-3 years
N1 – Advanced

Native-like fluency. Required for Japanese-taught graduate programs and most corporate jobs.

3-5 years
